Despite the wind and at times torrential rain throughout the day the Hastings Bonfire event celebrating the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings attracted massive crowds. The event was held on Saturday 15th October 2016 along Hastings seafront from Rock-a-Nore in the Old Town right along the front to Hastings Pier.

The day started in Battle Abbey really a few miles up the road from Hastings where the Battle of Hastings re-enactment takes place in the afternoon. The Abbey opens around 10am and there is plenty going on all day for kids and adults alike to enjoy with the main re-enactment in the afternoon.

There was a full day of activities to enjoy in Hastings including re-enactments, a hog roast, fireworks, guy making competitions and live music at The Stade. From 11.30am at St. Clements Church the children could join in with the Guy making in preperation for judging at the Guy making competition at The Stade Open Space at 3pm.

Drummers were performing around the Old Town and George Street throughout the whole day. With drumming performances at various locations such as outside theĀ RNLI Lifeboat Station, by the Winkle Clubs giant Winkle statue, in the courtyard off George Street with the giant Chessboard and other spots around the area.

Hastings Bonfire and Fireworks Celebration

All the activities were building up to the big finale of the Procession along Hastings seafront by torchlight, starting at around 7.15pm and the lighting of the bonfire and fireworks. Although members of the procession had a hard time lighting their torches due to the wet and windy weather, the procession went ahead as planned.

With the success of this years event we can’t wait for Hastings Bonfire Celebrations next year in 2017.
