Talia Russell Silk Screen Artist – Sailing Art

News Published Date : Wednesday, 18 May, 2016 – 22:00

Having grown up racing as a dingy sailor in New Zealand, the now Yorkshire based Silk Screen print artist Talia Russell progressed to working on a 34 mtr sailing super yacht in her younger years. Sailing is still a part of her life, with a Super Yacht Captain as a husband and a beautiful family yacht – a Dutch built Trintella 50A Sloop, which they spent 3 years renovating. They now spend their summers sailing in the med.

In New Zealand, she was blessed with a yacht club that had a hot pool to warm up in after sailing. These days she watches her 12 year old daughter learning to sail in a dry suit and isn’t quite convinced it’s as much fun. Currently living in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales their sailing club is based at the Grimsworth Reservoir.

Having previously printed a few seaside towns, this is Talia’s first nautical print. She has plans for some more nautical themed prints printed on old cancelled admiralty charts.

Silk Screen Sailing Prints

Talia Russell has recently released a new sailing related print, A1 in size her large scale work is a 7 colour hand pulled print in a limited edition of 20 in two different colour versions.

Talia feels that Silk screen printing is made for large scale, and therefore creates a picture window like effect when her prints are on the wall.

This new print depicts an appealing Gaff Rig Yacht meandering along in full sail out for a summer cruise. Gently rolling hills of the countryside provide a beautiful backdrop for this quintessential English summer scene.

Classic Gaff Rigs are prevalent in the UK, they exude beauty and craftsmanship and have a distinctive traditional appearance which has remained popular.

Starting from the traditional maroon colours of the sails, Talia tweaked the colours, experimenting and printing in fresh light colours of yellow, mauve, orange and dusky pink. Talia tends to print in traditional colours first and then in a 2nd edition she experiments with variations of colour and prints in a new brighter colour range.
